New Red at Greens

We’ve been to see Liz, Ben and all the team at Greens Bar & Kitchen in Winchester to try this years Beaujolais and enjoy a fabulous lunch. They’ve had a great first year as owners and we wish them all the best for a very busy Christmas and New Year.

Wonderful Copenhagen

Just spent a few days in Denmark to catch up on their thriving craft beer scene and visited the home of Carlsberg which gives a comprehensive history of the company. As the sun was shining it seemed too nice to not visit a lovely bar on the lake which featured this sad camel.

Carlsberg has an archive of 24,000 bottles of beer from around the world (That’s 2000 dozen for all you stocktakers out there) It was great to see several bottles of the late lamented Eldridge Pope Thomas Hardy Ale are part of the collection. Also, Carlsberg in Denmark is all 5% unlike to 3.4% version we have and you can definitely taste the difference. They also produce a dark lager at 4.6% which is very moreish.

Everyone we met was lovely, especially our new best friends at The Taphouse in Copenhagen which has 61 draught beers and chilli beer sausages. Definitely worth a visit.

The price of not drinking alcohol

Lo and behold an extract from an invoice seen this week – Heineken 0% £24.08 for a case of 24, Heineken 5% £22.00 for a case of 24. By my reckoning the price of not drinking alcohol is 9.5% higher than the real thing. It’s a no brainer.

All ready for Beltane

Whilst we’re all hiding indoors from the damp and cold, Beckets Inn in Glastonbury has a new outdoor fire pit all prepared for Beltane. The picture on May 1st was somewhat different with the garden packed for the celebration of Beltane. The usual selection of fine ales and stout were available to assist the festivities.

We visited an exhibition at the Porsche design museum and found this beautifully designed case for 20 bottles of Veltins beer. nice beer, very shiny crate.

If you examine this photo, you’ll see a string of 10 30ltr kegs of Zillertal Beer suspended from the helicoper. This is how they get it to the mountain top bars for your drinking pleasure when in Austria. Try asking your supplier if they’ll do this when the roads are flooded or you need an emergency delivery at short notice.

A Christmas Treat

Many thanks to Tom Hutchings from Palmers Brewery who brought this Christmas treat along to the Bicknoller Inn. It made the changeover day go very well and warmed us all up on a cold and damp morning.
